German technology firm SAP has opened a cloud data center in the UAE, becoming the first company to open a data center in the Gulf country.

The move enables them to tap into emirates’ digital transformation drive by providing scalable cloud solutions and is part of SAP’s five-year investment plan in the UAE.

The launch of the data center comes as US technology giants rush to the Middle East to cater to the region’s growing appetite for cloud solutions. Oracle, Microsoft and Amazon Web Services too have revealed their plans to launch data centers in the UAE in an effort to cash in on its growing IT market.

According to a study conducted by SAP and Oxford Economics Digital Transformation Executive Study, nearly 60% of companies and 75% of digital leaders in the MENA region plan to invest in cloud by 2019. The new data center would allow the company to tap into potential customers in the UAE who are looking to subscribe to cloud solutions.

Last year, the German tech giant revealed that it will be investing close to $200 million over the next five years. SAP also opened a new headquarters in Dubai Media City and established a Co-Innovation lab in Dubai- its 15th in the world.

Alongside the cloud data center, SAP is also investing in expanding its channel partner program that is key in guiding the private and public sector organizations to choose the digital solutions that befits their business needs.

“Over the past five years, the cloud has moved from an “if” question to a “when” question in the UAE,” said Julien Bertin, Managing Director, SAP UAE and Oman. “In response to our customer demands, our cloud data center will provide secure, scalable solutions needed to drive digital business innovation. UAE organizations of all sizes and verticals – from government organizations, to mega-events, and ports and logistics – can now fully digitally transform.”

SAP, which is Europe’s largest enterprise software firm, has also bagged a lucrative contract as Premier Partner of Expo 2020 Dubai. The company will help build the digital platform for the expected 25 million visitors.
