Harmgart was appointed as EBRD’s first managing director for sub-Saharan Africa in September 2024. She previously served as managing director for the Southern and Eastern Mediterranean region from 2020. She previously led the launch and the implementation of the Bank’s operations in the Eastern Mediterranean between 2013 and 2020. EBRD became Egypt’s lead partner on the energy pillar of the country-led platform for the Nexus on Water, Food and Energy (NWFE). In November 2024, EBRD extended a $21.3 million loan to Red Sea Wind Energy. Harmgart also serves as a member of the World Economic Forum’s Global Future Council on the New Agenda for Fragility and Resilience.
