The Middle East has traditionally been a lucrative market for multinational companies, and for years household names such as Proctor & Gamble, Unilever, PepsiCo, and General Motors among others, have sold to millions of consumers across the region. Today, due to favorable government policies and geographical advantages, the executives of many of these companies are governing ever larger areas based out of the GCC, for example Sanjeev Chadha of PepsiCo heads Asia, Middle East and North Africa, Mohamed Samir is President of P&G for the Indian Subcontinent, Middle East and Africa, and Mario Spangenberg heads General Motors operations in the Middle East and Africa. Now country leaders are looking to attract investment. Tech companies like IBM are working with the region’s governments, as well as corporates like ADCB and Etihad Airways, on their digital transformation. And our top executives are making a significant contribution to building physical infrastructure in the region. Dietmar Siersdorfer heads Siemens Middle East, which is building a mega power project in Egypt, and China State Construction Engineering Cooperation headed by Yu Tao is building the Kuwait University ACSF Project and a Central Utility Plant in Kuwait. The vast spends involved need to be financed by the governments. Low oil prices have caused deficit budgets all over the region, so major banks like HSBC and JP Morgan Chase are helping raise money through government bonds, as well as facilitating trade and lending to consumers. Methodology We sent out questionnaires to all the companies that were listed on the Forbes Global 2000 list and had significant operations in the region.
