Children are becoming active shoppers on e-commerce websites, with their activity more than trebling in the last 12 months, according to Kaspersky Lab’s annual report on kids’ safety.

The biggest growth has been in Russia and CIS (23%), followed by significant increases in North America (15%), Europe and the Middle East (11%), Asia and Latin America (9%). The most searched for retailers by children across the globe include AliExpress, Amazon and Ebay. Nike and Adidas, Apple, Samsung and fashion brands are the most searched for sites among the young audience.

As they take to ecommerce, children need to be given the right guidance and support to make sure they don’t share personal and payment information with fraudsters, or potentially fall for social engineering scams.

Some precautions include warning them about using unreliable (public) WiFi networks for online payments and instructing them to avoid sharing any personal details with retail personnel, whether via phone or online. Parents should also avoid saving payment details on devices.

The e-commerce market in MENA could grow 3.5 times by 2022, reaching a total market size of $28.5 billion, according to a recently published report by global management consultancy firm Bain & Company.

“The internet offers a lot of opportunities for kids, and we are now seeing many children becoming a key audience for online retailers. Whether they spend money or not, they need support and guidance from adults,” said Anna Larkina, web content analysis expert at Kaspersky Lab.
