Prime Minister Boris Johnson has effectively canceled Christmas plans for much of the country and put some 17 million people under strict lockdown rules. The coronavirus has already killed more than 67,000 in the UK.The new variant, which scientists said was 40%-70% more transmissible, is rapidly become the dominant strain in parts of southern England, including London. Cases of the new strain have also been detected in some other countries, including Denmark, Italy, and the Netherlands.
