<p class="MsoNormal">HS Markit’s Composite Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI), a good gauge of economic health, rose to 49.1 in December from the previous month's 45.3 but still remained significantly below a flash reading of 49.8. This assumes significance as any reading below 50 is considered to be a contraction.</p>
