United Airlines said on July 8 that it could furlough up to 36,000 employees—almost half its U.S. workforce—in October if the coronavirus pandemic continues to wreak havoc on global travel. The furlough warning includes some 15,000 flight attendants, more than half of the airline’s in-flight cabin crew alongside over 2,200 pilots.
