Hollywood is increasingly rolling out more biographical films, as they continue to rake in film awards and nominations at the industry’s most prestigious ceremonies.
Last year, Queen biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody” made over $900 million at the box office, dazzling audiences, and critics, and touching hearts especially in MENA thanks to the movie’s Egyptian-roots lead actor and Oscar-winner, Rami Malek.
As movies centering around real-life figures continue to pull in viewers, here are of some the industry’s biggest names playing leading roles in multi-million-dollar biopic projects:
Lady Gaga will return to the big screen in a Ridley Scott movie exploring the assassination of Guccio Gucci's grandson, Maurizio Gucci. The Italian-American is set to portray the ex-wife of the murdered family fashion heir, Patrizia Reggiani, who went to jail for arranging his murder. This marks Gaga’s return to the big screen following her first leading role in Oscar-winning movie, “A Star Is Born,” which grossed $434 million globally on just a $36 million budget.
Gaga is number 90 on Forbes’ list of highest-paid entertainers in the world 2019, with estimated earnings of $39.5 million.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s year just got even busier. The pro-wrestler-turned-Hollywood-actor—who is now the 25th highest-paid actor in the world with an estimated worth of $89.4 million—is going back to the ring to play MMA fighter and UFC champ, Mark Kerr. This dramatic role will mark a shift from his usual action-packed or comedic movies. The anticipated biopic will be produced by Johnson’s own production company, Seven Bucks Productions.
Just after going diabolical in Netflix’s neo-noir psychological thriller, “What/If,” Zellweger plays iconic America’s actress Judy Garland in the current musical biopic of the same name. As of November 3rd the movie had made over $33 million across box offices worldwide. The Oscar-winning actress was honored for her portrayal with a Hollywood Actress Award at the recent Annual Hollywood Film Awards.
Charlize Theron plays former Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly in upcoming drama movie “Bombshell,” which recounts the sexual harassment scandal and fall of Fox News founder, Roger Ailes
Oscar-winning Theron is the ninth highest-paid actress in the world this year, earning $23 million as revealed by Forbes.

Film: Ford V Ferrari
Matt Damon and Christian Bale will showcase their on-screen chemistry in this highly-anticipated new biographical film. In the movie, the pair are tasked to build a state-of-the-art Ford GT40 racing car to defeat Ferrari at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1966. The film’s budget is estimated to be $97.6 million and is expected to be released on November 28 across UAE theatres.
Kingsman actor Taron Egerton starred in the biographical musical film based on the life of the globally-renowned musician, Elton John, earlier this year. Directed by Dexter Fletcher, “Rocketman” was a box office success, collecting more than $195 million in box offices worldwide.

The plot revolves around a group of strippers conning their rich male clientele in the wake of the country’s financial crisis in 2008. Amidst rumors of Oscar nomination, Lopez’s worthy performance made “Hustlers” the biggest ever opening for a Lopez live-action movie and STXfilms movie. Her net worth of $43 million ranks her 76th on the Forbes’ 2019 Celebrity 100 Earnings list.
A David Bowie biopic is expected to hit screens next year, with English actor and singer, Johnny Flynn, taking the lead role of the late rock legend. “Stardust” follows a 24-year-old Bowie as he embarks on his first trip to America in the early 1970s and discovers his legendary alter ego, Ziggy Stardust.
